Whether the subject stems from his own imagination or reality, James spends time observing their physical features, gestures, and expressions, carefully noting every-detail and nuance. Using oil paints, James aims to bring his observations to life on canvas, layering color, texture, and brushwork to create a dynamic and engaging portrait.

In James'  paintings there is a perfected dance between realism and abstraction, a textured indulgence with brush and pigment, that draws the viewer in, often getting lost in hours of brush work and color variety, only to be brought back to the depth of his subjects following eyes.
